Economic Activities and Industries
Charlottetown's major industries are in the sectors of government and political since it was the "Birth Place of Confederation," healthcare, secondary and post-secondary education, technology, light manufacturing, biotechnology and information technology which they are new to, and machining. Over half of the jobs in the city are populated in government service, retail trade, the hospitality industry, health and social service and education. There aren't any natural resources found in Charlottetown except for their mineral rich soil which doesn't really count as a resource, but there is hope about oil. The major economic activities in the city would include agriculture, tourism, and fisheries. Agriculture remains to be one of their dominant activities since colonial times and most of it doesn't happen in the Charlottetown, but close to it. It's recored that Prince Edward Island is currently producing a 30% of Canada's potato production. Though men and women are struggling to diversify their economy and personal income is about 66% of the national average. There are three reasons as to why their economy struggles at times and that's because of their small but rising population, lack of inexpensive energy source and the high cost of transporting goods to and from the mainland. Electrical energy is the most expensive on the island in Canada. Their jobs are primarily service-based considering they don't have any natural resources or manufacture much of anything. Their activities are sustainable, but as fishing is wanted more by the public that could easily make their fisheries unsustainable. Fishing too much in one area or fishing too much in general will cause the fish to reproduce at a much slower rate or could even lead to extinction. So possibly increasing sustainability in their fishing industry would be to make sure they don't fish in the same area too much or fish everyday so that you can ensure that the fish will have time to reproduce and grow. For agriculture, the activity is sustainable as they have a lot of useable soil, but over farming can lead to the soil becoming un-useable because there are no nutrients in it. To increase sustainability , planting crops in different areas once in a while can let the soil replenish itself before getting it to be used again and planting different crops other than planting the same ones all the time in the same soil again since it can be bad for it. Below you can see some pie graphs relating to industries and occupations.
